As of May 7, 2025, the travel world changes. The Real ID law, passed as part of the 2005 Real ID Act, will officially go into effect. Understanding how these travel requirements impact your cruise plans is essential for ensuring a seamless adventure. If you’re dreaming of setting sail next year, here’s everything you need to know to prepare.
What Is the Real ID and Why Does It Matter?
The Real ID is a federal security standard for ID cards and driver’s licenses established by Congress in 2005. Its goal is to make identity verification more secure by requiring stricter issuance processes and additional verification of personal information. Starting May 7, 2025, U.S. travelers will need a Real ID-compliant card to board domestic flights, enter federal buildings, and access certain secure facilities.
If your cruise requires a domestic flight to the port, you’ll need a compliant ID for your flight. Without one, you may not be allowed to board your plane, jeopardizing your travel plans. This makes understanding Real ID requirements crucial for anyone flying to start their cruise adventure.
